Salado Mohamed Bule, a mother of six children, four boys, and two girls is a strong member of Sanitation group Bulo Ajuran camp. Sanitation workers provide an invaluable public service, vital to our daily lives and the environment yet they often work in a condition that exposes them to work consequences such as threats from Al-Shabaab or even death. Despite the challenges, Salado and her teammates never lose hope even though there were incidences of the targeting of them. Since the inception of the women’s sanitation group in Bulo Ajuran the group has gained more momentum and empowerment through training and skills which is helpful in aspect of sanitation workers’’ Salado said.
She added that the three-wheel drive eases the workload for them to transport to the solid-waste to the dumpsite. This idea has also boosted the general economy of the community by injecting a new market idea that enables traders to order more three-wheel drive both for carrying passengers and commodities. Through this Salado and her teammates arranged themselves into a smaller group (Ayuta) for the purpose of saving the money and engaging in income-generating activities like grocery selling. Salado and her savings team understand the value of financial prudence by controlling the cash withdrawal from the group account. She is thankful for the support ASEP and arche noVa has received throughout the years as she says support for the group has improved cleanliness in the town as well as the best practice to improve hygiene in the town.
